Student, gunman dead in Tennessee school shooting; two others injured

ANTIOCH, Tenn. — Police in Tennessee are investigating a school shooting that officials said left one student and the gunman dead and two others injured.

The shooting occurred Wednesday morning at Antioch High School, about 10 miles from Nashville, The Associated Press reported.

Update 2:55 p.m. ET Jan. 22: Officials confirm the 17-year-old shooter was a student at the high school, the AP reported.

Update 2:39 p.m. ET Jan. 22: Officials said the school had two resource officers in the building at the time of the shooting, the AP reported. They were not at the cafeteria when the shooting started but by the time they got there the shooting had stopped and the shooter had shot himself.

The second student wounded had a graze wound, CBS News reported.

Original report: The shooting happened in the school’s cafeteria after 11 a.m. local time. The shooter then turned the gun on himself, WSMV reported. The Associated Press reported it is not known if the shooter was a student at the school.

Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron said that the 17-year-old male gunman killed himself after fatally wounding a female student, the AP reported. Another female student was injured, WTVF reported.

A third student was injured but not shot, but had an injury to his face, WTVF reported.

Officials at the Metro Nashville Public Schools confirmed that the school was in lockdown after shots were fired inside.

In addition to local police, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is also on the scene, WTVF reported. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also on the scene, CNN reported.

The school has just under 2,000 students and 118 teachers, according to its website.
