Richard Roat, a character actor whose five-decade career included roles on “Seinfeld,” “Friends” and “Dallas,” died Aug. 5, his wife said.
Roat died on Aug. 5 in Orange County, California, his wife, Kathy Roat, confirmed to Variety. No cause of death was given, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Born on July 3, 1933, in Hartford, Connecticut, Roat received his big break when he was cast as Dr. Jerry Chandler in the 1962 pilot of the soap opera, “The Doctors,” Deadline reported. He played in 172 episodes of the series in 1963 and 1964, according to IMDb.com.

He would later appear on several television series, including “Hawaii Five-O,” “Cheers,” “Happy Days,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Golden Girls,” “The F.B.I.,” “Westworld,” “Kojak” and “St. Elsewhere,” according to Variety.
Roat appeared in more than 135 roles on television, film and on Broadway, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Roat played Dr. Berg in a Season 8 episode of “Seinfeld,” and played Burt in “Friends,” according to Variety.
During the 1990s he appeared on “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “Ellen,” “7th Heaven” and “Mad About You.”
In addition to acting, Roat prepared taxes for his colleagues in the entertainment industry, running Richard Roat Associates with his wife, Variety reported.
