Rapper Da Brat and her wife, Jesseca “Judy” Harris-Dupart, are expecting their first child together, several media outlets reported on Tuesday.
The rapper, 48, whose real name is Shawntae Harris-Dupart, shared the news in an interview with People.
“It’s been quite a journey,” the rapper told the magazine. “There’s a lot of stuff we learned about women over the age of 40.”
The couple married last year, CNN reported. Da Brat is 18 weeks pregnant, according to ABC News.
Jesseca Harris-Dupart has three children, CNN reported.
Da Brat revealed her baby bump in several photos posted to her Instagram account.
“BLESSINGS all 2023,” the rapper wrote in her photo captions.
“I never thought I was going to have kids,” the “Funkdafied” rapper told People. “I just thought it wasn’t in the cards for me. I’ve had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn’t get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn’t going to happen for me.”
Harris-Dupart, 41, is the CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Products and was launching a new line inspired by Da Brat’s braids and protective hairstyles, according to ABC News.
“It started as a joke, we were like, ‘We’re extending our family!’” Da Brat told People. “But then we got a huge response. It was like, ‘Oh my God do we want to actually have kids, and if we do, girl, we better hurry up!’”
Da Brat had to undergo surgery to remove fibroids and polyps in order to carry the embryo, USA Today reported.
“I fell in love with the idea and then it was all snatched away from me,” the rapper told People.
Women who have fibroids are more likely to have problems during pregnancy and delivery, ABC News reported, citing the Office on Women’s Health.
