Fiesta Passion, Fiesta Fashion THRU MAY 5TH

San Antonio fashion icons Michael Quintanilla and Graciela Carillo will draw on their own collections of clothes, costumes, accessories and more to create “Fiesta Passion, Fiesta Fashion,” a short-term exhibit at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. During the Fiesta season, Quintanilla is a common sight, as emcee for a variety of special events. For the exhibit, he has loaned pieces such as a vintage 1972 drum major’s coat, embellished with sequins and rhinestones. He has added a collection of hats including a three-tiered cascaron that shoots confetti, a hat commemorating the Great Lime Shortage of 2014, and a “Hat of Hats,” which stacks 11 hats atop each other, each representing a day of Fiesta. Behind the scenes, Graciela is designing dresses and festive outfits for Fiesta royalty, spouses to the Kings, and everyday Fiesta party-goers. Where Quintanilla shows costume and exuberance, Graciela is about function and practicality, while still capturing and expressing the joy of a “Puro San Antonio” celebration. Her internationally sourced fabrics and materials reflect San Antonio’s own multicultural heritage as it blends with the vivacious styles of indigenous cultures from across Latin America. The Creation of Me DECEMBER 8, 2018 - MARCH 10, 2019

A three-month art project challenged students from Brooks Academy of Science and Engineering to take on the complicated and nuanced theme of identity. The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures has collaborated with Brooks to show the results of this project as the next student exhibit, “The Creation of Me.” Through interviews with parents, grandparents and other family members, students uncovered stories about their heritage and developed an understanding of their places in society. The exercise instilled a sense of pride in their pasts and their families. They discovered and defined who they are and where they come from. Using the dry point with Plexiglas process, students turned a family photo into a work of art. The institute will select from 46 pieces from student participants in grades 9 to 12. Viva San Antonio: Celebrating our City DECEMBER 8, 2018 - MARCH 31, 2019

UTSA anthropology students have chosen to research tourism's role in San Antonio as a class project, evaluating its impact on local culture and in the construction of the community's collective memory. The class studies trends and impact of changes through the Alamo's evolving role in the city, Fiesta's emergence as an annual tradition, the construction and expansion of the San Antonio River Walk, HemisFair '68, and the city's projected growth. The students contend that the emergence of tourism industry may have created disparities in authenticity, as well as gender and ethnic representation. Institute of Texan Culture 801 E. Cesar E.
