Mexican Arts Show and Sale MAY 3 - MAY 5 FREE

The Western National Parks Association and the National Park Service present the Mexican Art Show and Sale, May 3-5 from 9 am - 5 pm. The show features Mata Ortiz pottery by Jorge Quintana and Oaxacan woodwork by Jacobo Ángeles. Sales from this art show and daily sales at the Western National Parks Association gift shop at the Visitor Center directly support National Park Service operations, education, and interpretation at Mission San José. How do communities hold together and adapt during times of change? Join us as we explore how handcrafts can tell the story of cultural adaptation in Northern Mexico and South Texas. Culture, trade, colonization, and access to resources all affect the design and materials used to create art throughout history. Mission era pottery can teach us about how indigenous cultures were adapting, incorporating, and surviving in the Spanish Colonial Period. Join us as we explore the beauty and influence of pottery throughout history, from mission era pottery discovered at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park to modern Mata Ortiz pottery artists. Park Rangers will offer guided programs at 10 am, 2 pm (English) and 3 pm (Spanish) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday, join Park Archeologist Susan Snow to view and analyze pottery artifacts excavated at the mission sites. Art Platicas, (art discussions and workshops) are offered on Saturday and Sunday. At 11:00 am Saturday and Sunday, join Jacobo Angeles for a Wood Carving Platica. At 1:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, visit us for a Ceramics Platica with Jorge Quintana. This event is free and family friendly! Mission San Jose 6701 San Jose Drive
