 Dave Mustaine I had met Dave a few times over the years under brief professional situations. These encounters were during his days of various addictions, when stories of his temperamental nature were a well-known deterrent for anyone in Radio wanting to spend any extended time around Dave. My personal interaction with Dave during this period was uneventful. Shortly after his return to recording following a serious bout of cleaning up his act and recommitting to his family and his health, Dave requested an opportunity to go on the road specifically to tour Radio stations and meet the people who had been part of the Megadeth support team over those somewhat hazy years. I wasn't sure what to expect out of this meeting, and to make it even more of an enigma of anticipation, I found out there would be extra time in San Antonio and dinner was part of the agenda. The formal interview went cordial enough. He was open and honest and no topic was off limits. I even joked about his reputation, figuring this would be a good measuring stick for how far he'd really come as a regular-guy kind of human being. His answer was, "Yeah, I was kind of a dick over the years. The good thing is I don't remember. The bad thing is no one else ever forgot." GREAT ANSWER. How could you not love the guy? However my favorite moment was while at dinner we discovered we had a mutual passion for Hockey. How could you not really love the guy? After alienating everyone else at the table engrossed in the kind of debate that only true die-hard fans can have, Dave confessed he was...as he put it, "How big of a puss am I?" This statement was followed by Dave pulling out his wallet to show me a custom made Hockey card of his son in team gear, complete with personal and "career" statistics. How could you really, really not love the guy? |
