 Kittie This photo is from backstage before the 2000 Masked Ball...that explains the Halloween costumes. When they first came onto the scene with their debut "Spit," Kittie was getting a LOT of attention for being 4-under aged girls who could ROCK! This was during the explosion period for Brittney, Christina, etc. Critically they were being pronounced as the future of female Rock. I went to dinner with the girls and Dad Lander and found a band of 4 still-uncorrupted by the Rock and Roll lifestyle, on the borderline of still having little girl tendencies, but coming into their own, young women. It was a blast hearing their naive notions of what their place in Rock was, and it was going to be. The personal highlight for me was when Mercedes took to the drum kit to start the night. The pure joyful look to us off at the side of the stage upon the realization that this humongous ravenous crowd was there to see Kittie was the kind of appreciative moment that those of us who support and help develop bands live for (when you work behind the scenes you meet enough egotistical unappreciative dicks that it's easy to become jaded...think Rex in the movie "Empire Records.") Over the next few years Kittie regularly returned to S.A. to further develop their rapidly growing fan base. Unfortunately, upon release of their second album Oracle, it all came crashing down. For some reason, Morgan Lander who has one of the best, most powerful feminine voice is Rock, decided she wanted to be a growling estrogen-heavy version of a vocalist who sings for a band like Cannibal Corpse. Her guttural growl was well done, but not what made Kittie fans in the first place. It was explained to me that they simply wanted to be the hardest female-fronted band ever. Nothing wrong with that goal, but it reminds me of when in the movie "Spinal Tap," when they decide to "chuck all the Heavy Metal bullshit" and do what they've secretly always wanted to do, a style of freeform metal/jazz fusion. Same thing, only in reverse. The result was possibly the biggest bomb of an album of the year. At their next Sunset Station concert, they gave the audience from start to finish "the new" Kittie, even re-working the first album songs with this new presentation. That performance produced quite possibly the all time record for number of bodies walking out during the performance of a headliner. To those who loved the new style, it was an evolution into God...Goddess like status. They had achieved their goal. I hope that some day the Lander sisters grow out of this phase and return to create the kind of music that will once again anoint them as the future of female-fronted bands. |
